HCH IS GOING GREEN!
If you have been to the Hospital lately, then you will have noticed the recycle bins and new cups and to-go containers in our cafeteria. In our shift towards eco-friendly packaging and dining services, all of our “paper/plastic” products are now biodegradable and compostable.

To the planet, going green means that instead of sitting in a landfill through many lifetimes, these products will break down with the natural cycle of degradation back to the soil within several weeks.

To us consumers, it means we can have a good conscience by using products that don’t clutter the planet or contribute to its decline. In fact, in order to obtain the full benefit of these “compostable” products, they need to be disposed of in a compost (or recycled), versus sitting in a landfill. We are actively engaging in many ways that we can make a positive, lasting difference, including the possibility of a compost program and maintaining recycling throughout the Hospital.

Please know that although we are providing mindful products for you to use, you can also help by:
  • Asking yourself if your food really needs a to-go container?
  • Bring your own coffee cup to the cafeteria or Enchanted Cup to refill regularly, including water containers.
  • Remember that, even though biodegradables are smart products, they do cost more and we each can make responsible consumer decisions by re-using wherever possible and using them only when necessary.
We are working on many more sustainable programs. Our new CEO, Peter Hofstetter, is very supportive and “green-minded” and has many ideas he would like to see in our Hospital community. Know that we welcome your suggestions!
