Holy Cross Hospital Time-Line
1936
Mabel Dodge Luhan built a home in the late 1920s for her son and his wife. The young couple decided that Taos was not for them, and they moved within a short period of time. After standing vacant for several years, the home was offered by Mrs. Luhan to the Town of Taos to use as a hospital; however, neither the Town nor the County had the capital needed to establish and to begin operating a hospital. Hearing of the offer, a small group of concerned citizens contacted the Archbishop in Santa Fe, to see if an order of nuns would be interested in starting a new hospital in Taos. The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth from Chicago accepted the offer and the property, and Holy Cross Hospital began to take form.
1937
Holy Cross Hospital opened its doors to the public as a 10-bed community hospital.
1960
The new Hospital building was constructed in front of the old facility and then connected to it. The number of available patient beds almost tripled, increasing to a total of 28.
1970
After almost 33 years of continuously operating the Hospital, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth sold it to Presbyterian Medical Services of Santa Fe.
1976
Taos Medical Services Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, tax-exempt, publicly-supported foundation, was incorporated by a group of local doctors with the intention of raising private funds for the support of Holy Cross Hospital.
1978
An Intensive Care Unit was added and major improvements were made to the Emergency Room, the Laboratory, and the X-Ray Department.
1979
Presbyterian Medical Services sold the Hospital to a for-profit corporation based in California.
1980
To oversee and direct the operations of the Hospital.
1985
Once again, the Hospital was sold. This time, the California owners sold it to a Santa Fe real estate holding company to avoid foreclosure.
1991
The voters in Taos County overwhelmingly passed a 1/2 percent county-wide gross receipts tax to finance a $11,700,000 hospital bond issue for the construction of a totally a new medical complex.
1993
Construction started on the new Hospital and in 1994 the county approved and made a second bond issue for $4,100,000 in March to provide the basic furnishings and equipment for the new Hospital. Holy Cross admitted its last patient to the old Hospital and its first patient to the new Hospital in December.
1995
The new Hospital opened in mid-January, the Foundation officially launched its $1,125,000 Phase I Fund-Raising Campaign to begin its Long-Range Funding Program.
2002
Nearly 28,503 square feet of new construction was started onto the existing Hospital facility. The Hospital facility (60,841 square feet) will also be remodeled in several areas and the expansion made the current Holy Cross Hospital over 89,000 square feet.
2004
Construction completed on the new patient care unit and out-patient surgery portion of the expansion project.
2005
All construction and expansion completed which enlarged the Hospital by nearly one-half its original size, with nearly 29,000 square feet of new construction including: north side new patient wing with eight double rooms; east side new wing with day surgery lobby; two new digital operating room suites and new recovery room; expanded Pharmacy and Imaging Departments; south side expanded Emergency and Laboratory Departments; new Auxiliary Gift Shop and new Chapel. A New Laundry, Education and Ambulance Building (LEA) also built on Hospital campus grounds.
2006
New Mexico Governor Richardson awarded $1.1 million to build a new Pediatric Children's Clinic and physician offices on the hospital campus. Construction scheduled to begin in August 2008.
2007
Hospital adds expanded Hospitalists services, new surgeons, and employs some of those key physicians to serve our area in Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics and General Surgery as an insurance to the community that these vital services, while not profitable, will still be in Taos. New physicians in Radiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Hospitalist and Family Medicine are added.
2008
Physician growth reaches over 50 physicians and Mid-levels (Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Licensed Certified Nurse Midwives) on the attending staff, and over 80 practitioners on our medical staff total. The Hospital now has over 425 employees, excluding the physicians on the team. Patient Safety is continually expanded with the success of our LifeWings initiatives, new compliance and disaster preparedness work is accomplished and Information Technology additions are taking center stage.
Plans are being drawn up for the construction of a new 12,000 square-foot support building for Wellness and Human Resource / Staff Education purposes, and the construction of the Pediatric building on land donated by the Hospital to the Town of Taos. Long-range facility and campus planning is underway, as well as revisions to our Medical Staff needs for the coming decade and the desire to add new specialties and more physicians to our team to serve our growing service area. Patient satisfaction is at new record levels and more people are choosing Holy Cross from a wider and wider portion of Northeast New Mexico and beyond. |
