Look for a New Courtyard Plaque
Several months ago we decided to end the brick fund-raising campaign after we installed the last batch of bricks. We recently discovered that several of the previously installed bricks have badly deteriorated to the point that the name is not readable. Rather than purchasing all-new bricks and reinstalling them only to have the same problem in a few years, we have decided to create a permanent plaque with all the names from the bricks — both old and new — on the pillar near the bricks in the courtyard. The plaque has been ordered and should be installed in a few weeks. We are also arranging the installation of the final set of 50 bricks.

HCH Awards 50 Scholarships
The Holy Cross Hospital Personnel and Staff Committee recently selected 50 recipients for 2008 HCH scholarships. Each award is worth a maximum of $4,000 paid over 2-4 years. Recipients were selected based on their total evaluation scores.
In the first two weeks of April, the Foundation Scholarship Committee plus several volunteers read and evaluated all the applications: 87 from high school seniors and 33 from college undergraduates. Readers considered the quality of the students’ essays, the students’ GPA and test scores, the quality of the students’ coursework, the students’ recommendation letters, the relationship of the students to employees at HCH, and other characteristics.
In the end, the readers worked a total of nine-and-a-half hours over a two-week period to complete these evaluations. Many thanks go to: Beatriz Gonzales, Judy Cockburn, Richard Archuleta, Diane Enright, Greg Payton, Derek Davis, Jock Fleming, Anne Marie Petrokubi, Dr. Alden Cockburn, and Linda Aubrecht for their many hours of work.
The winners of scholarships have all been notified. The high school award-winners all attended an orientation session in early May, and they will receive their certificates at their school ceremonies. Many thanks to Holy Cross Hospital Board for its great generosity and support of the education of Taos County residents.
