1936 - Mabel Dodge Luhan built a home in the late 1920's for her son and his wife. The young couple decided that Taos was not for them, and they moved within a short period of time. After standing vacant for several years, the home was offered by Mrs. Luhan to the Town of Taos to use as a hospital; however, neither the Town nor the County had the capital needed to establish and to begin operating a hospital. Hearing of the offer, a small group of concerned citizens contacted the Archbishop in Santa Fe, to see if an order of nuns would be interested in starting a new hospital in Taos. The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth from Chicago accepted the offer and the property, and Holy Cross Hospital began to take form.
