What is a Hospitalist?

A Hospitalist is a credentialed physician who works for Holy Cross Hospital and specializes in in-patient care. They cover for a patient's primary care physician 24-hours-a-day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, even though the primary care physician remains on call for consults.

History of Hospitalists
Over the past several year,s adult medicine and family medicine processes have melded together in a more integrated way in caring for patients in the hospital. Some physicians now choose to specialize only in the care ofiIn-patients. Hospitalists do not take care of patients hospitalized in more specialized areas such as surgery, obstetrics or pediatrics.

Benefits of a Hospitalist
Medical studies indicate that patients in the hospital under a Hospitalist's care plus care from their primary physician 24-hours-a-day, 7 days a week get out of the hospital sooner and have better health outcomes.

Continuity of Care is Top Priority in Caring for Patients
Holy Cross Hospitalists work closely with a patient's primary physician to assure the best possible care is provided to each patient during their stay in the hospital. Care is transferred back to the primary physician when a patient is discharged from the hospital.
