THE WOMEN'S HEALTH INSTITUTE
Women’s Health Institute is growing to meet the increased demand for obstetrical and gynecological services for women of Northern New Mexico of all ages. WHI offers comprehensive and compassionate women’s medical services with an experienced team of providers including three experienced OB-GYNs and three Certified Nurse Midwives. Women seeking help with women’s health services and delivering normal, low-risk pregnancies, may now schedule appointments with additional convenience.

In October of 2003, Dr. Shanti Mohling and her husband Dr. Scott Resnick, both Board-Certified Obstetrics-Gynecologist (OB-GYN) physicians, founded the Women’s Health Institute in Taos, New Mexico. The first WHI clinic was located across from Holy Cross Hospital in the Northern New Mexico Women’s Health and Birth Center on Maestas Road. WHI moved to a customized, remodeled clinic space on Gusdorf Road in 2005, where the women’s medical clinic is operated today.

HISTORY OF THE WOMEN'S HEALTH INSTITUTE
In February of 2007, Holy Cross Hospital created the Maternal Obstetric Management Service Program (MOMs) and took over day-to-day operations at WHI, employing Dr. Mohling and the WHI staff. Additional OB-GYN physicians Tim Moore, MD, Board-Certified OB-GYN and Matthew Maynard, DO, OB-GYN were added as providers to WHI in 2007 and 2008 by Holy Cross Hospital. Two additional Certified Nurse Midwives were also added to the complement of providers during 2008.

Shanti Mohling, MD, OB-GYN, FACOG
Dr. Mohling is a Board-Certified OB-GYN. A graduate of the University of Colorado Medical School, Dr. Mohling has been serving the women of Northern New Mexico for the past seven years. She specializes in well-women care, menopausal care and weight loss, gynecologic surgery, minimally-invasive surgery and high-risk obstetrics. Using the digital surgical suites at Holy Cross Hospital, she is able to offer same day procedures such as laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery techniques that significantly reduce usual recovery times.

Tim J. Moore, MD, OB-GYN, FACOG
Tim J. Moore, MD is a Board-Certified OB-GYN with 20 years of experience offering comprehensive, dedicated and sensitive heath care to women of all ages. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He served an internship, his residency and also was Chief Resident at the University of Washington affiliated hospitals. Dr. Moore had an OB-GYN practice in North Conway, New Hampshire and was the Medical Director of the Midwife Service at Virginia Mason Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He has

“WHI offers professional, experienced Certified Nurse Midwives, a practice considered to be the norm is large metropolitan hospitals and clinics today,” Shanti Mohling, MD, the founder of WHI stated.
Women sharing their birth stories who have used Certified Nurse Midwives say they were empowering, wonderful and unforgettable. Two reports by the Institute of Medicine and the National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality praise Certified Nurse Midwives’ contributions in reducing the incidence of low birth weight infants and call for their increased utilization.

Linda Friedman, RN
Certified Nurse Midwife

Certified Nurse Midwife Linda Friedman has been with WHI since 2005. Linda has worked in Taos in health care for over 30 years. She worked at Holy Cross Hospital as a Labor and Delivery Nurse for 20 years and has been a Certified Nurse Midwife since 1999. At WHI, she specializes in well-woman exams, postpartum wellness and mood disorders, menopausal care, pelvic pain injections and weight-management. She also provides prenatal care but does not assist in deliveries. Linda Friedman has been a valuable asset to both Dr. Mohling and the Women’s Health Institute for several years.


Wendy M. Kaggerud, RN
Certified Nurse Midwife

Wendy M. Kaggerud is a Certified Nurse Midwife and nurse who has delivered over 2,000 babies in her career. She is an RN, Certified Nurse Midwife with a Master’s Degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook, with a midwifery concentration and a Bachelor’s in Community Leadership and Youth Development from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was the Director of Nurse Midwifery at the All Women’s Health Care Clinic in Flemington, New Jersey for four years and the Director of Nurse Midwifery for Affiliates in Obstetrics and Gynecology, PA; Flemington, New Jersey for 20 years. For 14 years, from 1988-2002, Wendy was a member of the clinical faculty at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Allied Health Professions, Department of Nurse Midwifery in Newark, New Jersey. She was also a member of the clinical faculty at the University of Pennsylvania from 2004-2007.


Susan Akins, RN
Certified Nurse Midwife

Susan Akins, Certified Nurse Midwife has her nursing degree from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and a Master’s Degree in Maternal Child Health from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. Her midwifery training was at Parkland School of Nurse Midwifery in Dallas, Texas. Susan has delivered over 1,300 babies in her career. She worked at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas as a CNM in private practice. Most recently, she was at Women’s Health Alliance in a group with eight physicians and another CNM. Before that, she worked at Renaissance Women’s Health Associates with two physicians, a nurse-practitioner and another CNM. At Parkland Memorial Hospital, she provided comprehensive women’s health care in a busy public hospital. She also worked in a birth center environment. Susan was the Director of Physician’s Day Surgery in Dallas for six years and also has six years experience as the Supervisor of Labor and Delivery at Baylor University Medical Center. She was on the clinical faculty of several area universities working with nurse practitioners and nursing students.
